چکیده

12 Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are in the same family as the organisms that cause tuberculosis and leprosy, but unlike those organisms, NTM are widely dispersed in our environment, vary greatly in their ability to cause disease, and are not spread from person to person. There are about 140 different species of mycobacteria. Mycobacteria not closely related to tuberculosis or leprosy are called nontuberculous mycobacteria, environmental mycobacteria, and myco-bacteria other than tuberculosis (MOTT). Recent studies have documented increases in NTM infections, and, in many areas of the United States, these infections outnumber tuberculosis. Epidemiology, prevalence, economic burden, vulnerable populations Nontuberculous mycobacteria were first identified in the late 19th century, when a tuberculosis-like disease was reported in chickens. In the 1930s, they were documented to cause disease in humans, but it was not until the 1950s that pulmonary disease due to these organisms became more commonly recognized. Most clini-cians discounted the clinical significance of these bacteria, until the acquired

Adjuvant surgical treatment of nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease.

BACKGROUND According to the 2007 American Thoracic Society/Infectious Diseases Society of America statement on nontuberculous mycobacterial diseases, more evidence for the benefits of adjuvant nontuberculous mycobacterial lung disease surgical intervention is needed before its wide application can be recommended. METHODS A retrospective review was conducted of 60 consecutive patients who met ...

Elevated serum CA 19-9 levels in patients with pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial disease.

Increased serum CA 19-9 levels in patients with nonmalignant diseases have been investigated in previous reports. This study evaluates the clinical significance of serum CA 19-9 elevation in pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial disease and pulmonary tuberculosis. The median CA 19-9 level was higher in patients with pulmonary nontuberculous mycobacterial disease than in patients with pulmonary...

Acute kidney injury in a patient with nontuberculous mycobacterial infections: a case report

Nontuberculous mycobacterial infections are an increasingly recognized cause of chronic lung disease in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent patients. Pre-existing lung disease, alcohol abuse, diabetes mellitus, malignancy, and smoking have been identified as important risk factors in nontuberculous mycobacterial infections, with only few cases of Nontuberculous mycobacterial infection in...

Nontuberculous Mycobacterial Disease Mortality in the United States, 1999–2010: A Population-Based Comparative Study

BACKGROUND Environmental nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are ubiquitous organisms with which humans commonly interact. The epidemiologic characteristics of NTM diseases including mortality rate and its associated factors remain largely unknown. In this study, we explored the geographical area of exposure and mortality and comorbid conditions of affected persons to determine environment, host,...

PURPOSE To report national case-finding results for nontuberculous mycobacterial keratitis and describe its association with laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). DESIGN Enhanced passive disease reporting. METHODS In April 2001, we investigated a California cluster of Mycobacterium chelonae keratitis associated with hyperopic LASIK using a contact lens mask. To identify other possibly relat...
